This morning, the desktop computers in the Library Reading Room were configured for swipe-to-print using Pharos. The process took about 2 hours. 7 computers were not completed; 4 were in use by students, and 3 need to be reimaged altogether because of software issues. The remaining computers will be completed shortly. A&IT staff have verified that the default printer for students is set to the correct Pharos queue, and verified that student accounts can print and release successfully at designated devices.

Signage and step-by-step documentation for swipe-to-print was provided to Library staff this morning for posting on the devices and other key locations.

At this point, students in the Reading Room and the BRO 1330 computer lab can release their print jobs at any printer at the following locations using their DolphinOne card:

  • Broome Library Reading Room;
  • Broome Library Rooom 1330 computer lab; and
  • Broome Library printer/copiers, located on 1st and 2nd floor behind Freudian Sip.

In addition, both card stations are now live in Broome Library and the University Student Union. They are now known as DOCKs: DolphinOne Card Kiosks (formerly called PHIL stations or card charging kiosks). Students, employees and guests can currently use the stations to add funds to their DolphinOne and CI Guest cards and check balances on their card accounts. In a few weeks, the DOCKs will enable you to purchase a CI Guest card.

Here's a close-up:

The stations accept cash, Visa and Mastercard for adding funds and purchasing Guest cards. Learn more about the DOCKs.

Yesterday, we went live with our first Swipe-to-print rollout in the Library, and it's working well so far.

Two color printers are connected to the new system. One is in Broome Library 1330:

The other (which can both copy and print) is located by the 1st floor restrooms behind Freudian Sip:

Both will print in black and white by default. Using the printer properties dialog on a lab computer, students can choose to print in color if desired.

In the coming weeks, we will be adding more printers and copiers to the swipe-to-print system.

Today we met to discuss our requirements for extending CashNet self-service through myCI.

The University already uses CashNet for processing student payment of fees through CI Records.

During this next CashNet implementation phase, we will be extending CashNet functionality to enable students and employees to add funds to their various DolphinOne Card account "buckets" via myCI.

A kick-off conference call with the CashNet team has been scheduled for Monday, June 7 at 3pm.

PHAROS:

  1. A user testing meeting was held this week; test plan, results form, and instructions were given to testing participants. Initial tests have been successful.
  2. Pharos Uniprint 8.x accessibility issues are being evaluated.
Campus Dining
  1. Selected AT3000 as desired terminal type for University Glen vendors
  2. Reviewed updated schedule during planning meeting

The PHIL stations have been installed in the University Student Union (USU) and Broome Library.

Here's the location in the USU:

It's located in the alcove next to the water fountains, near the reception area.

Here's what it will look like once operational:

It was nice to see that the USU staff at the reception desk were already aware of its existence. However, because it's tucked away, additional signage may be necessary to improve visibility of its location.

Here's the one on the 1st floor of Broome Library, right behind Freudian Sip:

NOTE: both stations are currenty being configured and are not operational. Out of order signs are posted on both stations.

  1. Both PHIL stations have been installed. One is located in Broome Library, and the other is located in the University Student Union. They are not yet available for student use.
  2. Test credit card transactions were successfully processed on both machines. Further testing is underway.
PHAROS Phase 1:

Test plans and test forms have been created. Test participants have been contacted regarding test details. Testing group includes currently enrolled students, student assistants and employees.

Here's the latest update on Phase 1 of the One Card Project.

Core System:

  1. New DolphinOne and guest cards have been designed and submitted to vendor for manufacture. Estimated delivery for newly produced cards is June 14.
  2. BlackBoard Transaction System (BBTS) upgrade has been installed; testing and configuration tweaks are in progress.

Campus Dining:
  1. Meeting is scheduled for tomorrow for a subgroup to discuss campus dining timeline and outstanding issues.

Card Services:
  1. Documentation of organizational support in progress. Terms of Service (ToS) document for One Card support is about 30% complete. This document will largely define procedures regarding typical card support processes (such as help for card system problems, service outages, lost/damaged/stolen cards, refunds, etc).
  2. Card Services Web site has been launched; includes project roadmap.

PHIL Stations:
  1. The PHIL stations are the automated card-charging and guest card issue kiosks.
  2. A work request has been submitted to Operations, Planning and Construction (OPC) for installation of first PHIL station (to be located in the Broome Library). Completion date for work is to be determined.

PHAROS Phase 1:
A parallel PHAROS core system has been upgraded from v7 to v8. This upgrade includes integration with BBTS to enable swipe-to-release printing using the DolphinOne card. The upgraded v8 will continue to run in parallel (for the time being) with v7. Testing of the PHAROS v8 system with current students is in progress.

The version 8 system will be initially used for 2 devices in the University Library:
  • one device in Computer Room (BRO 1330) for color & black-and-white printing only; and
  • one device on the 1st floor (behind Freudian Sip) for color printing and copying.
Go-live for these two devices is scheduled for Tuesday, June 8. In the meanwhile, Summer session students at the University will continue to use the existing PaperCut printing system until the new devices are launched.

The CI Card Services web site launched today at http://www.csuci.edu/cardservices/.

The site currently provides project background & contact information. New features, including frequently asked questions and help for students, employees and guests are currently under development.

The Card Project Roadmap outlines the direction for the deployment of card-related services over the next several years at the University. The roadmap will continue to be defined in greater detail as the project requirements become more clear.

Do you have additional items to add to the roadmap, or have some changes to recommend? Post a comment on the blog or contact us.

Picking accurate names for systems and services early on is key to developing effective communication about the project. After discussion with members of the planning group, it looks like we've settled on the following names:

DolphinOne Card: the official name for the student & employee campus identification & transaction card.

Guest Card: the official name for the card that will be available for public purchase and will provide access to key services and systems, including on-campus copying and printing. Eventually, the Guest Card may enable as point-of-sale (POS) purchase and access to Library resources.

Card Services: the name of the organization responsible for providing day-to-day service and support to the campus community for card-related issues. Currently, this organization will consist of employees from Academic & Information Technology (A&IT), Budget and Support Services and the University Cashier.

Let us know what you think about these names!
